Short history of zouk in Luxembourg

My name is Anna Noszczynska. I came to Luxembourg  in October 2011  for work after  3 years of living in Czech Republic  where I was  intensively learning and dancing Brazilian zouk with the internationally recognized zouk artists - Carlos da Silva and his partner Fernanda. I was sad to discover that there is not even one zouk dancer  in the whole country of Luxembourg. Luckily, I was introduced to Jihan Iskandarani - experienced zouk dancer from Bitburg and Annette Kryszewski from Trier, who were as frustrated as me, not  being able to dance zouk in Luxembourg.

It motivated us to organize the first Brazilian zouk event with a teacher from Bonn - Sam Ganon, that was held in Dance In school in Trier  in February 2013. After, together with Jihan and Annette we launched our Zouk Addicted Trier dance project with the idea of promoting and teaching zouk in Trier. It  was a challenge for 3 girls to do classes without male leader, so we were  also learning how  to lead in zouk. Slowly, it brought us a few dedicated students. We also organized some more events with Sam Ganon, Ailton Silva from Berlin and Abdel Zouk from Düsseldorf.

Finally, in August 2014 Abdel Zouk from Düsseldorf  agreed to start a regular weekly course in Dance In, Trier driving every week more than 2h one way just to give classes. Because  many of our students were coming from Luxembourg, in February 2015 we organized our first zouk event there in Star's Bar with Abdel. From then on, we stopped courses in Trier and Jihan and I launched Lux luvs zouk dance project with Brazilian zouk social nights every Monday in Star's Bar in Luxembourg, and from October 2015 also zouk courses that are running until today with Jani Smura, who learnt zouk in Luxembourg and international events, and I.

In the meantime our Luxembourg dance scene gained an experience zouker from New York - Eric Frawley, who lived in Luxembourg  between 2013 and 2015 and contributed to the growth of zouk scene  by inviting internationally recognized teachers like Ilse & Carlos and Evelyn Magyari. Simultanously, Jihan Iskandarani with a help of local zoukers from Nancy, organized lambazouk events with Chris from Aachen, Rishi and Barbara from the Netherlands and Leo and Romina from Brazil and Argentina.

Today, we can say the small zouk scene exists in Luxembourg with regular classes, big enough to afford inviting teachers from abroad and planning to grow further.
